Writing Prompts: Symbolism

Comments Off

The recent spate of holidays got me thinking about how it is that something so mundane as a calendar day could become something more than it was intended to become. Days of the week, months and years were only meant to mark the different seasons and the progress of time and yet these same days, months and years hold special meaning for both individuals and nations alike.

This week, our theme is symbolism and the meaning of things. Use these writing prompts as ways to motivate, define and challenge the characters in your stories.

1. Choose a theme song for your character and incorporate it into a story about them.

2. Write about the effect the loss of a favorite toy as a child has had on the adult later in life.

3. Write about the traits of an heirloom necklace that perfectly reflects its original owner.

4. Write about what your character has come to symbolize to other characters in the story.

5. Write about a town famous for its peculiarities.
