Sunday May 11th is Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day started off as a private celebration by Anna Jarvis of her mother Ann Jarvis who had launched “Mother’s Day” campaigns for peace and worker’s safety. Anna’s mother had died on May 9th, 1905. Through her efforts and those of John Wanaker, Mother’s Day was officially declared a holiday in the United States by Woodrow Wilson on May 14, 1914.

So in the spirit of honoring our mothers, this week’s writing prompts will center around mom. Today being Monday, we’re going to start off with some basic ideas.

1. Write the scene in a hospital delivery room with a woman becoming a mom for the first time.

2. Write the scene where a mom is helping her child get ready to leave home for college.

3. Write the scene of a mom witnessing the death row execution of her child.

4. Write the scene where a mom is forced to choose between her children. (for something good or bad)

5. Write the scene where a mom realizes that her child has a life altering illness.
