Writing Prompts: Creating Symbols

Comments Off

Today’s writing prompts are going to focus on how symbols obtain their status as such. The majority of symbols start out as ordinary and even positive things. For example, before the Nazi’s got ahold of it, the Swastika used to be a positive symbol used to denote good luck. Unfortunately, it has been corrupted to stand for something negative and demeaning.

Use these writing prompts to explore the evolution of the symbols in your characters lives.

1. Write about how a letter opener comes to symbolize a successful marriage.

2. Write about how a small town comes to symbolize all that is wrong with the world.

3. Write about how a pair of pants comes to symbolize an eating disorder.

4. Write about how a flower comes to symbolize all the good things in the world.

5. Write about how a coffee cup comes to symbolize a lost opportunity.
