Writing Prompts: Taxed to Death

Well it’s that time of year again. The last day to see just how much of your hard earned money the tax man gets to take from you. I was reflecting with friends about how it seems like such a wasted effort. We give our money to people who are supposed to use it for the greater good of the citizens of this country, yet someone we’ve managed to be trillions of dollars in debt and people are homeless and starving. How does this happen in supposedly the richest country in the world?

Historically, fiction stories have been used to spread ideas. Especially in times where oppression of said ideas was the goal of the day. In the words of Hugo Weaving playing V in V for Vendetta; ‘While the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn’t there?’

In honor of tax day, today’s creative writing prompts revolve around government and taxation.

1. Write about a modern day revolt against taxes.

2. Write about a president who forces the bureaucrats to be fiscally responsible.

3. Write about a country that governs itself without the need for a government.

4. Write about a tax audit gone wild.

5. Write about a family (or person or country) destroyed by out of control taxation.
